Understanding the Limits of Islamic Power

Yesterday I spent time with a man who wielded great administrative power over a region of his vast nation of birth.

In talking of his power and capabilities, I pressed him a bit.

Were you like a wazir?

“Greater.  My power was such that I could ask for someone to be beaten and it would be carried out.”  Smile of satisfaction.

My big smile in return and, “Oh, so you were also the jurist in the region. Sentencing could be carried out.”
